The Center for Knowledge, Communication and Technology (PPKT) was established in January 1, 2003 with the combination of four entities based on Information Technology in USM which were there Computer Centre, Information Technology Centre, Information Management System Unit (SISMAP) and the Information Technology Development Unit in the Main Campus. It was officiated by the then Vice Chancelor, The Honourable Prof Dato’ Dr Dzulkifli Abd Razan on August 27, 2003. PPKT has played a role in becoming a one stop centre in preparing quality IT services and acting as a catalyst to all research, learning, administrative, teaching, management and negotiation activities for Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
Due to the absence of a branch of IT Centre, Information System Unit and Information Technology Development Unit in Health Campus, the PPKT in Health Campus is currently the exchange of a name for the Computer Centre Branch without additional staff member.
The Computer Centre Branch started with one staff in 1986 and continued to expand. In 1996, the Computer Centre Branch started the Hospital Information Services and also the distribution of PCs to all lecturers, category A officers and departments to introduce USMNet network services which has become the PPKT’s core service until now. The Hospital Information Services has finally been taken over by HUSM Information System Unit in the year 2000. With the help of PPKT Main Campus, PPKT Health Campus will offer all services needed to ensure the success of USM IT agendas in this campus. The development of the corporate application system will be developed by the staff in Main Campus to ensure it is integrated.
A holistic role is hoped to ensure the development as well as the use of a more integrated IT and communication services in USM, in view of the aim in becoming an e-Research University.
